These three apparently simple letters, but full of content, significantly altered commercial relations and the market as a whole, determining management models, defining investment strategies and guiding the most diverse business decisions.
ESG is an acronym for the English term Environmental, Social and Governance, which, in a literal translation into Portuguese, means Environmental, Social and Governance. This expression was officially used for the first time in 2004 when Kofi Annan, then Secretary-General of the United Nations, together with 23 financial institutions representing over US$ 6 trillion in assets under management at the time, developed guidelines and recommendations on the subject in a report called Who Cares Wins – WCW (“Who cares, wins”, in a free translation).
In very general terms, the term seeks to call the attention of the market as a whole so that organizations start to incorporate the best social, environmental and governance practices into their own cultures, aiming at an effective integration of these three factors in their business activities.
So, currently, more than a mere subjective concept, the ESG gains quite objective and concrete contours when it joins the traditional market financial metrics and starts to represent an effective parameter of business analysis , allowing the measurement not only of the level of social commitment, but of the market value of each company, being a modern synonym of responsibility, competitiveness and reputation. Ahead is walking side by side.
